I feel like that web page/article should have a big * at the bottom that says "* Planned prior to global recession." Hehe.
I do remember watching Modern Marvels, I think it was, on Discovery Channel or some place a couple years back and they were talking about the building of the hotel (the one that looks like a sail) and the crazy into-unstable-ocean-ground drilling that was involved and crazy problems that popped up with it half complete already -- that they did resolve, and also about an interesting problem with water circulation in the world islands that was causing water not to circulate enough, resulting in "stale" water staying in a certain region of the "world", starting to turn color and smell, which they also fixed by digging the trenches deeper or something. It was v.interesting.
Reading about all the projects going on at once makes my head spin. Each new project has to one up the last, and be the ____est in the world. At some point, I'm expecting open-ended construction where they perpetually add floors to a building so that it never relinquishes the top spot.
TIME had an article about the global recession's effect on Dubai. Sounds like they're still forging ahead.
