Although I Don't Believe In Coincidences...

A really good music theory explanation of the Joe Satriani v. Coldplay thing. Joe Satriani is and has always been the real deal.

He has a detailed blog post which is a really good read.

The comments on that blog post are also quite educational.

The portions of the songs in question do sound similar to me, my lack of music theory knowledge notwithstanding. I'll leave the "too similar" question to the musicologists, though.

By the "nothing new under the sun" argument, every song probably contains elements of some that came before.

Coldplay itself has addressed the topic in the past, saying that "some bands are reluctant to admit that they take things from other artists" but "we don't mind telling" (in regards to the influence of Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" on "Speed of Sound").

The line between inspiration and duplication in art has always been murky, but there are established precedents in the courts, when it comes to determining whether that line has been crossed.

Certainly a band of Coldplay's prominence would be aware of the rules (or have people to be aware of the rules for them).

It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out.
