Olafur Eliasson

SFMOMA has an Olafur Eliasson exhibit that alliesglove was talking about yesterday, and — not-coincidentally — a couple of the bloggers I follow mentioned seeing his works there recently.

I don't have much trouble calling something like this "art". Even "room for one colour" crosses the imaginary line that I can't put "4'33"" across. I think the question of "what is art?" is a valid question, and that it is great when a work can spawn multiple interpretations in its audience's minds, but that that doesn't automatically make anything and everything (or nothing) into a work of art. Then again, getting up on stage and sitting in front of a piano without playing it is still a "performance", of a different kind. I could go on, flipping back and forth, but I'll spare you all the agony. What does "art" mean to you?

I'm definitely not cultured in the way of art, but this exhibit was very cool. In the SFMOMA the "room for one colour" was probably my favorite. They situated that exhibit right outside the elevator, it was like a forced induction into this other world that you knew would be a great exhibit. He had something for nerds, modern art buffs, and people who appreciate industrial arts.

I guess for me I don't really know what "art" means quite yet.
